Peace Days 2023

Peace Days is a space that’s been created to promote and inspire understanding, goodwill and compassion locally, nationally, and internationally, it supports and motivates people who want a culture of peace and compassion. It encourages conversations and relationships that will inspire action, commitment, and the promotion of positive peace and peace literacy. Peace Days was inspired by Rotary World Peace Partners in 2003 envisaging the idea of a Canadian Museum for Human Rights as a beacon of hope for the oppressed, impoverished and vulnerable Peoples of the World. Peace Days grew out of a desire to celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace (September 21st annually).

"It is impressive to witness how Peace Days has helped many people to have a better understanding of compassionate action, the importance of promoting human dignity, justice, and peace through planned events and activities in collaboration with its community partners. It is truly inspiring to see the growth of Peace Days over the last ten years, and the commitment of so many persons to the cause of service above self and the greater good." Julie Turenne-Maynard, Peace Days Venue Participant.

International Day Of Democracy – September 15

Each year the International Day of Democracy is observed around the world on 15 September. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day to review the state of democracy in the world. Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of and support by the international community, national governing bodies, civil society and individuals, can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality to be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere.

Through resolution A/62/7, the United Nations General Assembly established the first International Day of Democracy in 2007. The resolution encouraged Governments to reinforce national programs devoted to the promotion of democracy and also decided that 15 September of each year should be observed as the International Day of Democracy.

On this day, the United Nations invites all nations and people to honor democracy through the celebration of human rights, values of freedom, and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal vote.

International Day Of Peace – September 21

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution 36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982.

In 2001, the General Assembly by unanimous vote adopted resolution 55/282, which established 21 September as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire.

The United Nations invites all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.

Peace Days – September 2023: A Call to Action

September 2023 provides a unique opportunity to join with people across the region and around the world to take meaningful action for peace. Observe Peace Days in an active way that is meaningful to you.

As a Community or as an Organization

We encourage you to plan an activity related to peace in keeping with your organization’s vision and mission for the month of September. Activities can be large or small, in-house, or public. We encourage collaborations, as well as offering public events at low or no cost to make them accessible. We especially encourage activities that involve one or more levels of peace – PERSONAL, LOCAL, GLOBAL, and plans that include follow up activities that will take place after September 21. We also urge you to help spread the word about Peace Days to your partners and collaborating organizations. If you would like to organize an event, please contact us.

The International Day of Peace is also a powerful day to communicate about your ongoing work related to peace and non-violence. We urge organizations and civic leaders to use the month of September as a platform to communicate and raise awareness about peace-related initiatives and programs and encourage participation at the Peace Days events.
